Removing an Offensive Book from a School

I have read the Barnes & Nobel overview of “Rainbowland” by Henry Barnes. A book is an opinion. Even non-fiction is the sum of the author’s evaluation of cited facts. Quashing a book is quashing free speech, and is censorship. The selections in a library reflect the mission of the host of the collection.

This book constructs an America where the government tries to offend no one. They make the flag a transparent sheet of plastic so the colors will not upset people. And so on. Then you can see what we actually have and why it is inevitable entertainment and a test for survival. (My opinion.)

A school’s mission is to encourage critical thinking — to expose students to differing opinions so they can learn to evaluate them to their own understanding. The intellectually safe environment of a school is the best place to encounter challenges to norms.

“Rainbowland” is a thought provoker.
