Julie Merz, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee executive sent me an email explaining what it takes to win an election:
“It takes polling, strategy, and research support from proven experts.“It takes staff to organize events and plan meetings with community leaders.”
Here is my plea for the benefit of all of us:
NO, NO, NO! Change your focus.
You are a perfect executive for executives. There is a foundation that is under your feet that you have not acknowledged.
Your policies are what you are selling. Then you organize to get us to vote with your policies. The victory goes to the best sold policies, not personalities, not negative ads.
You need to get public buy-in before you organize. Or an existing popular public policy package may use your organizational skills. Sell the policy first.
- We want to be free to walk the street without law enforcement stepping into our path. Then we will vote with you.
- We want to make personal choices that have no impact on other people such as when to get a vasectomy or an abortion. Then we will vote with you.
- We want to work in a safe place for a living wage. Then we will vote with you.
- We want public education that is affordable through trade school and college. Then we will vote with you.
- We want the internet to be accessible to everyone. Then we will vote with you.
- We want roads, bridges, and airports to be fully operational and safe. Then we will vote with you.
- We want universal access to healthcare. Then we will vote with you.
Tell us these positive things before you invest your time, money, and ego to get out the vote.
Thank you.
